Jukkasjärvi Icehotel Guide

Sleep in a Work of Art: The Jukkasjärvi Icehotel Guide

Prepare for an unforgettable experience at the Jukkasjärvi Icehotel, the world's first and largest hotel built entirely of ice and snow. Located in Swedish Lapland, this ephemeral masterpiece is rebuilt each winter, offering a unique and ever-changing artistic experience. Every year, artists from around the globe contribute to the hotel's design, creating stunning ice sculptures and themed rooms. The Icehotel was founded in 1989 by Yngve Bergqvist. It started as an art exhibition in an igloo and quickly evolved into a full-fledged hotel. Each year, around 40,000 tons of ice are harvested from the Torne River to construct the hotel. The ice is incredibly clear and strong, making it ideal for building and sculpting. The hotel melts each spring, returning to the river, only to be reborn again the following winter. Visitors can choose to stay in one of the uniquely designed ice rooms or warm rooms. Activities include ice sculpting workshops, dog sledding, snowmobiling, and Northern Lights viewing. The Icebar is a must-visit, where you can enjoy drinks served in ice glasses. The hotel also features a church made of ice, where couples can get married in a truly unique setting. While in the area, try reindeer meat, a traditional Sami dish, for a taste of local cuisine.
